Cargo Inspector Career Overview

A cargo inspector inspects the cargoes of seagoing vessels verifying that cargo is in compliance with any national or international regulations. Training may often be provided on the job; however maritime education programs are available and are preferred by some employers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities of a Cargo Inspector

A cargo inspector will inspect cargoes to ensure they meet any pertinent regulations. The inspector may also check for damage of cargo or proper storage techniques. The inspector will then record findings and submit reports. Following are two job descriptions taken from actual job postings found online:

  • 'Inspector will manage inspection, reporting, damage assessment and adjusting claims as assigned.' -- Faststream Recruitment Inc.
  • 'Responsibilities include performing visual observations, volume and temperature measurement, as well as sampling products. Inspector will attend to product movements involving tank and line transfers, loading and discharging vessels and barges.' - Intertek

Job Requirements for Cargo Inspectors

Job requirements for cargo inspector will vary depending on the specific job responsibilities. Many jobs require a minimum of a high school diploma and will provide training on the job. Other employers prefer candidates with previous maritime experience or completion of a maritime training program. Below are examples of job requirements for two jobs found listed online:

  • 'Requirements for cargo inspectors include a maritime school degree or the equivalent , two to five years of working experience in related field, competency in survey reports writing, multitasking capabilities with administrative and computer skills and knowledge of contract, maritime or insurance law.' -- CJA Marine Services Pte. Job Outlook for Cargo Inspectors

According to payscale.com, a cargo inspector with one to four years of experience can expect a salary around $45,000 annually. Some cargo inspectors may be more marketable or increase their earning potential by obtaining certifications, such as the one offered by the International School for Inspectors of Petroleum.
