Job Duties and Responsibilities of a Safety Compliance Officer
A safety compliance officer may perform machine or plant inspections, perform air tests, design safe work spaces, report on and suggest improvement to decrease machine downtime or employee absenteeism or prepare documents used in legal proceedings. The responsibilities will vary by workplace and the specific hazards that may be present. Following are two examples taken from listings on monster.com showing various job responsibilities of a safety compliance officer:
- 'Candidate will administer plant safety program, monitoring compliance with company and governmental policies and regulations. He or she will conduct compliance inspections and audits, perform industrial hygiene tests, assure that all employees, contractors and visitors are properly trained in job hazards and safe work practices and maintain accurate records.' -Think Energy Group
- 'The main function of the safety officer is ensuring the safety and health of personnel and ensuring project compliance for various demolition, decommissioning, construction and asbestos abatement projects.' -PIKA International, Inc.
Job Requirements of a Safety Compliance Officer
Most safety compliance officers are required to be knowledgeable of the standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is an internationally recognized and accepted organization that sets industrial and commercial standards. Officers must also be familiar with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Employers prefer candidates with bachelor's degrees although some will consider individuals who have completed an associate's level program specific to the industry. The excerpts below taken from postings on careerbuilder.com give several more examples of specific requirements:
- 'Safety officer must have knowledge of standard construction building and manufacturing and industrial processes, knowledge of hazardous chemicals and materials and their effects on the work environment and skill in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of investigation and inspection data.' -Gila River Indian Community
- 'Requirements for the safety compliance officer include a minimum of two years of experience in a manufacturing environment, competency in Microsoft Excel and Word and a strong background in health and safety. A bachelor's degree in Health and Safety or Industrial Engineering is a plus.' -Aerotek
Job Outlook for Safety Compliance Officers
Job growth is expected in this field mostly due to the public demand for safe and healthy working environments. The need for emergency preparedness will also continue to increase in importance and more specialists will be needed to deal with technological advances. According to bls.gov, median salaries for safety compliance officers were $54,920 annually in 2006. Safety compliance officers may increase their earning potential or employability by earning certification. Certifications are offered by many professional organizations, including the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists.
