Medical Technologist Job Duties and Responsibilities
A medical technologist is responsible for medical testing. This includes preparing reagents or mediums for samples. Medical technologists then analyze the blood or tissue samples they've collected for diseases, cancer and other medical abnormalities. Technologists transmit the results in writing to doctors and maintain copies for insurance, diagnostic or other purposes. Aside from basic recordkeeping, a medical technologist may write technical manuals or other instructions on how to complete lab work. Monster.com posting excerpts include the following examples:

Medical Technologist Job Requirements
Becoming a medical technologist requires a four-year degree; moreover, the bulk of coursework is premedical. A technologist obtains certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or a similar organization. The training of a medical technologist provides experience with test equipment, venipuncture and procedures to gather samples for testing. Medical Technologist Occupational Outlook
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov, reported that medical and laboratory technologists had median annual incomes of $49,700 during 2006. The highest earnings as a medical technologist were in private clinics and hospitals, respectively. The highest wages as a technologist in the medical field were in California.
Hospitals and clinics will offer medical technologists the most employment opportunities. Some locations such as California or the Boston metropolitan area will provide a large concentration of jobs. Medical technologists with a graduate degree will be able to pursue careers in research or more prestigious medical schools.
The BLS projects demand for medical technologists to increase by 14% between 2006 and 2016. Computer or software skills and proficiency with electronics related to the medical field will be required due to the fact that spectrometers and other equipment for analysis are becoming automated.
