Duties and Responsibilities of a Hospitality Administrator

Hospitality administrators are responsible for ensuring that wide range of services within either a hotel, a resort or another tourist attraction run efficiently and profitably. In a hotel, a hospitality administrator will be responsible for all of the services that it offers. This includes the restaurant, bars and recreational areas, such as swimming pools and rooftop patios. They may not directly manage each of these operations but they will consult with individual managers during the course of a business day to ensure that operations are running smoothly and that costs are being kept in line. Other duties are specified in these Monster.com job postings:

  • 'The hotel manager is responsible for accomplishing food and beverage service strategies, maintaining food and beverage ambiance, controlling food and beverage service supplies and maintaining customer satisfaction.' --The Olympic Collection Banquet & Conference Center
  • 'The ideal candidate will be responsible for building and driving sales, and strengthening customer satisfaction and product quality. The district manger will also be responsible for recruiting and coaching new employees and overseeing the management workforce.' --Motel 6, Inc.

Job Requirements

Most if not all employers of hospitality administrators require that applicants have at least an undergraduate degree in hospitality or hotel management. Many other employers require that candidates have an advanced degree in addition to an undergraduate degree. Voluntary certification is available through the Educational Institute of American Hotel and Lodging Association. Hospitality administrators must be good managers, and in order to be an effective manager, it is required that candidates have strong verbal and written communication skills. They must also have strong interpersonal skills because they will be interacting with a wide variety of people during the course of their workday. Other requirements include a strong grasp of elementary mathematics for financial purposes and strong computer skills. Other job requirements may be similar to the following as found in jobs posted on Careerbuilder.com:

  • 'Three years experience managing operations of a high volume restaurant. Completion of a degree in hospitality or business. Completion of company management training program.' - Golden Corral
  • 'Five year hotel management experience. Degree in hospitality or management. Professional presentation skills. Understanding of Bell, Concierges, PBX and Front Office. Knowledgeable for Excel and MS Word.' - CyberCoders

Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Relations, the employment outlook for hospitality administrators is expected to grow at a rate as fast as the national average for all other jobs to 2016. Business and tourist travel will continue to spur the employment trend among hospitality administrators. In the current U.S. economy the weak dollar has contributed to an increase in the number of tourists. This will have a positive affect on the hiring of hospitality administrators as long as this trend continues. In 2007 over 600 new hotels were built and it is expected that just as many will be built in 2008. This will also spur the need for hospitality administrators in the short-term. The median annual salary of a hospitality administrator is $42,320.
