Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
Most newly constructed buildings include heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Depending upon local regulations, these systems may be required by law, or they may be installed for comfort reasons. Many older buildings are retrofitted with these technologies to make them more usable and marketable. A growing number of colleges, universities and vocational schools are offering degrees and coursework for those interested in ductwork, climate control and ventilation careers. In these programs, students study thermodynamic theory, pollution and chemicals as well as the skills needed for physical installation and upkeep. Most heating, ventilation, and AC mechanics will work for private companies who install or service ventilation systems in homes, offices, and other buildings as they are needed. Depending upon local regulations, safety and other certifications may be needed. According to the US Department of Labor, www.bls.gov, hourly wages average around $17, not including the possibility of overtime and benefits.
