Medical Careers: Medical Assisting Professions

Medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical functions in medical practice offices. Formal medical assistant training is preferred by employers, and instructs students on administrative duties such as updating and filing patients' medical records, arranging for hospital admission and ancillary services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Clinical duties normally included in an education program include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting practitioners during examinations. While most medical assistants work in hospitals, clinics, rehab centers and doctor's offices, others choose to specialize. Specialized positions include ophthalmic medical assistants and podiatric medical assistants.
