Overview of Computer Science and Programming Degree Programs

Computer science is more than a degree program or course of study; It is a way of thinking. Computer sciences and programming degree programs don't simply teach students to write programs in the most popular languages, they teach students how to think like a computer programmer. This includes courses on basic computer architecture, challenging mathematics, logic, circuitry, algorithms and more. Most classes won't involve any actual programming at all! Students will generally learn one or two common languages to use for in-class projects. However, their real skill will be in learning how to quickly adapt to new languages and technologies as they become available. Students should be wary of computer science and programming programs that feel like vocational programs. Computer science is a discipline grounded in theory and ideas, not memorization of technology. Remember today's technologies are already becoming the obsolete technologies of tomorrow!
