What to Do With Your Free Science Education
A free science education doesn't exactly qualify you to wear a lab coat. A bachelor's degree is typically the minimum requirement for nearly every scientific profession, though an associate's degree or a certificate in applied science is often enough to secure a position as a science technician. Master's degrees are becoming more common in most fields and a Ph.D. is nearly always required for jobs in college teaching or research.
Careers in science aside, getting a free science education is a good thing for the average citizen. Familiarity with the basic principles of science can make it easier to understand information reported to you by doctors, scientists and the general media.
Taking free science courses may also be helpful for prospective undergraduate and graduate students. It never hurts to prepare or brush up on your knowledge before entering the classroom officially.
Salary Potential
Salaries for scientists and science technicians can vary wildly because they depend heavily on the employer, location, level of education and experience. Research scientists and scientists employed by the federal government tend to make the most money. Biological scientists and biophysicists also do very well.
| Job | Median Annual Salary |
|---|---|
| Science Technicians | $52,500 |
| Biological Scientists | $72,146 |
| Chemists and Material Scientists | $59,870 |
| Environmental Scientists | $56,100 |
| Physicists | $76,320 |
