Basics of an Online Degree in Linguistics
An online degree program in linguistics engages in the theoretical and analytical study of human language as the sum of individual components, as whole systems and as individual languages relate to one another. Undergraduate programs will take the broadest survey of the subject possible. Classes might include cognitive science, logic, language acquisition, language families, language structure, philosophy of language, phonetics, syntax and semantics. Graduate level programs will emphasize research and theory and allow degree candidates to focus on such specialties as applied linguistics, computational linguistics, historical linguistics, neurolinguistics or teaching. A bachelors degree is typically completed in four years, a masters degree in two to three years and a doctoral degree in two to five years.
What Can I Do With an Online Linguistics Degree?
Linguistics was once a subject whose career track led exclusively into academics. In recent years, private industry and government agencies have become interested in it for its potential to facilitate communication. An online degree in linguistics can lead to careers in anthropology, international affairs, communications consulting and translation. Masters degree holders may become teachers and doctoral degree holders may become professors of linguistics. Students who pursue studies in linguistics and computer science may find positions assisting with the development of speech recognition software or researching artificial intelligence.
