Basics of a Nursing Certification
A Nursing Certification is the entry-level requirement for most nursing positions. A nursing certificate involves modest coursework and a great deal of hands-on training in healthcare settings. A Nursing Certification allows students to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and is completed after a state-regulated nursing exam. Examples of Nursing Certifications include a Nursing Certificate, a Nursing Healthcare Certificate and a Nursing Assistant Certificate. These certificates cover basic aspects of nursing and healthcare, including courses on health assessment, pharmacology, anatomy, biology, mental health nursing, gerontology, nursing informatics, family case management and ethical issues in healthcare.
What Can I Do with a Nursing Certification?
A Nursing Certification can prepare students to work in a variety of healthcare environments, including hospitals, clinics, assisted-living facilities, private homes, nursing homes and more. A Nursing Certification allows students to pursue careers as certified nursing assistants (CNAs), certified nursing aides, orderlies, personal-care technicians, patient-care assistants, home health aides and more. Certified nursing assistants work with supervisory nurses and medical professionals to provide daily healthcare for patients. Most nursing assistant positions require strong communication and analytical skills in order to successfully work in healthcare. A Nursing Certification also allows nurses to enhance their qualifications by pursuing higher educational programs that lead to jobs as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs).
Job Outlook for Careers Related to Certification in Nursing
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of CNAs, nursing aides and related occupations to grow substantially, more than 28% from 2006 to 2016. There were more than 2.3 million nursing aid positions held in 2006. Healthcare is a constantly growing industry that is often unaffected by outside economic factors. The average hourly salary for nursing aides and assistants in 2006 was $10.67, with the highest 10% earning $14.99 or more per hour (www.bls.gov). Many CNAs continue their education in order to become registered nurses or licensed practical nurses, which both have significantly higher salaries.
