How Can a 16 Year Old Apply for a GED Age Waiver?

In most states, there are guidelines for students interested in taking the GED. One important requirement is the age restriction. This article outlines how to get around the age requirement and register as a 16-year-old.

In many states, there are strict guidelines for GED eligibility, including:

  • Proof of Residency
  • Proof of High School Un-Enrollment.
  • An Age Requirement

In most states, students must be 17-years-old or older to take the GED. In spite of these rules, there are many 16-year-olds who are pursuing admission to a college or employment program. These 16-year-olds can be eligible to take the GED because often states are willing to compromise on the minimum age if there is just cause.

Students between 16 and 17-years-old may take the GED Tests if they complete an age waiver application and provide a letter from a university, a college or a post-secondary vocational program. The included letter must identify the potential applicant and the reason that they need a GED or high school diploma in order to be admitted to the program or to receive financial aid. The student must have this letter on official letterhead stationary and must submit it to the state GED Office along with the age waiver application.

If a waiver is approved, a letter of approval will be sent to the candidate from the State GED Testing Office and this letter must be shown to the examiner prior to testing.
