Basics of a Certificate in Child Day Care

A Child Day Care Certificate program provides an introduction to essential duties and skills needed for child care. These skills include effective communication with children and parents, an understanding of growth and development patterns in young children, the ability to recognize signs of child abuse, knowledge of proper nutrition and activity planning. Classes might include infant and toddler development, child psychology, family sociology, art for children and safety and first aid. Some programs might integrate classroom study with hands-on experience in a day care center. A certificate is typically completed in 1-2 years.

What Can I Do With a Child Day Care Certificate?

A Child Day Care Certificate prepares certificate holders for entry-level positions in day care centers and private or public preschools. Job eligibility at a public school will depend on licensing laws, which vary from state to state. A certificate holder might also seek employment as a nanny or au pair. Those who have accumulated several years of experience can consider opening their own day care facility, working at a resource or referral agency consulting with parents on available child services. Certificate holders who pursue further education can become preschool teachers if they earn a bachelor or associate degree or day care administrators if they earn a masters degree.
