Basics of a Bachelor Degree in Zoology

A Bachelors Degree in Zoology broadly relates to the study of animals, including their behavior, biology and interaction with their environment. Course work may include biology, genetics, general and organic chemistry and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Degree programs feature a mix of classroom study and field research, and require four or five years to complete. University science and veterinary departments and a variety of zoology colleges offer the degree.

What Can I Do With a Zoology Bachelor Degree?

A number of paths are open to students who hold a Bachelors Degree in Zoology. Career possibilities include zookeeper, veterinarian, teacher or professor, fisheries manager, wildlife researcher, medical researcher, industrial researcher and conservation officer. However, some of these require further education, and in all cases a student will have to choose a specialty within the field. Some Zoology Bachelor Degree holders may work in education, helping to educate elementary, middle and high school students, although additional teaching certifications may be required for these positions.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, opportunities for zoologists specifically and biological scientists in general should be average, with job opportunities expected to increase by about 10% in the coming decade. Strong demand for professionals trained in environmental and ecological studies is expected to drive this nominal job growth. Zoologists and wildlife biologists earned a median salary of about $53,300 a year as of 2006.
