Basics of an Associate Degree in Cosmetology

A Cosmetology Degree program focuses on the techniques and technologies used for hair, skin and nail care. An Associate of Art in Cosmetology or an Associate of Applied Science in Cosmetology is offered by career and vocational schools and, unlike a certificate program, includes general education requirements in the liberal arts and sciences along with courses in hairstyling, nail and skin care and salon management. State licensure is required to practice cosmetology, and most schools administer the licensure exam to graduation candidates.

What Can I Do With a Cosmetology Associate Degree?

Graduates of Associate Degree in Cosmetology programs most often find employment as hairstylists, hairdressers or manicurists in salons. Sales positions for beauty products may also be a possibility for trained Cosmetologists. In some cases, graduates who have taken additional courses in skin care become estheticians, specializing in facials or massage. Cosmetologists also work as makeup artists for the screen and stage or in hospitals as medical estheticians who provide therapy for cancer patients and the terminally ill.
